How the draw works
Every participant gives exactly one gift and receives exactly one gift, and nobody draws their own name. Instead of shuffling names over and over and hoping the rules hold, the generator uses a matching method that checks every possible pairing. If your rules allow a valid draw, it finds one. If they don’t, it tells you exactly which people are boxed in, so you know which rule to relax.
Exclusions and households
Exclusions stop specific pairings. Type Alex > Sam when Alex should not draw Sam, or Alex = Sam when neither should draw the other, which is handy for couples and roommates. To keep whole families or teams apart, add a group line such as Parker home: Alex, Sam, Jo. Nobody in a group will draw someone else from that group.
Too many rules can make a draw impossible. For example, if four people may only give to the same three people, there is no fair answer. The generator explains this instead of quietly ignoring a rule.
Keeping the draw secret
Each printed slip has three panels: the giver’s name at the top, the recipient in the middle, and a blank cover panel at the bottom. Cut the slips apart, fold the bottom panel up over the middle, and hand them out. The giver’s name stays visible on the outside, so you can sort the slips without seeing who drew whom.
The on-screen preview is blurred by default so a quick glance over your shoulder doesn’t spoil the surprise. The organizer copy is a separate page. To print only the slips, choose Slips to hand out before you download.
Budget, date and a note
Add a spending limit and the exchange date so everyone has the same details in hand. A short note, like “Wrap it in newspaper” or “Something homemade,” prints on every slip.
Redrawing
Each draw has a number. Using the same names, rules and draw number gives the same result, which helps if you need to reprint a lost slip. Press the shuffle button next to the draw number for a completely new draw.
Printing tips
- Choose US Letter or A4 to match your paper, and print at Actual size / 100%.
- Six slips fit on each page. A sheet of regular printer paper works well; use card stock if you want slips that are harder to see through.
- Print the organizer copy last and keep it with you. Don’t leave it on a shared printer.
Frequently asked questions
Do you store or email the names?
No. The draw happens in your browser. This page doesn’t upload participant names or send email. Save your PDF if you want a record.
How many people can join?
From 3 to 100 participants per draw. Each name must be unique, so add a last initial if two people share a first name.
Can someone end up giving to the person who gives to them?
Yes, two people can draw each other. It is a normal outcome of a random draw. If you want to prevent a specific pair, add Name = Name as an exclusion.
What if someone drops out after the draw?
Remove the name and draw again, then reprint every slip. Changing one assignment by hand can leave someone without a gift.
